Our alumni continue to do great things!
Special Education teacher, and newly published author, Debra Toymil'11 wrote the book "I Love My Bear" for children with special needs because they "readily respond to rhyming, tactile, and kinesthetic components." She shares that, "After many years of struggling to find materials that are at an appropriate level for teaching and parenting children with severe disabilities (including cognitive visual and neurological), I decided to create my own materials to promote growth and learning."
Debra received her MSEd in Special Education from #PaceSOE and is also a certified Teacher of the Blind, and has worked with multiply disabled children at the Lavelle School for the Blind, Bronx, NY for over 25 years. She has two children, one of whom had Lowe's Syndrome. Her experience of raising a child with this disability is what inspired her to become a special education teacher.
Not only does Debra use "I Love My Bear" in her classroom of visually impaired students and those with multiple disabilities, but her colleagues, including teachers, occupational, and speech therapists, often "borrow" it for their students. Even her most challenging students, with limited expressive and receptive language skills, are able to comprehend and follow along with this book.
What does Debra's goal? She shares that it is her "sincerest hope that this book reaches as many children (both those with and without disabilities) as possible." Thank you, Debra, for the difference you are making in the lives of so many children! We are Pace Proud!
